Viewing Distance Calculator
Based on THX and SMPTE angle recommendations. Enter your screen size and resolution — the calculator updates as you type. Room depth is optional but improves the output.
How the calculation works. Optimal distance uses the THX reference angle of 40 degrees, which places the screen's width at a subtended angle that matches professional reference conditions. Minimum distance is the SMPTE 30-degree threshold below which resolution benefit begins. Maximum distance is where the specified resolution provides no perceivable advantage over a lower resolution display at that distance. All distances are from the viewer's eye position to the screen surface.
